the penultimate season, (or is that really the final season?) of the big bang theory is here, and i think it is easily the best season yet. there are still some definite weak points, but it is largely a success.

one of the weak points of the show has always been the characters’ lack of desert-traveling. usually when the show has gone to the desert, it only went there for one episode to dramatize it, and then the rest of the time it was just a regular episode with nothing in it at all.

this season they went to the desert and never looked back, with a point to every episode. first, penny and leonard went to the desert to see if it was where the cave-dwelling hermit came from in the first season’s finale. then raj and howard went to the desert to study gravitational theory together. then the gang went to the desert for a footrace that didn’t even have a winner.

sure, the whole episode revolves around sheldon’s comic-book store, and whether or not he can get it in shape for his birthday, but i think that even without the desert they still might have been able to do that. if it came down to it, sheldon’s store would get the first-page position in every issue for the rest of eternity. but, you just can’t have desert-traveling through a plot device.

the only reason the comic-book store happened is because some huge-name comic-book related company had time to do an episode with sheldon in it. in the past that could not have happened, because those companies would have been too busy doing comic-book things.

one of the show’s biggest strengths has always been that leonard and penny and sheldon have very different personalities. leonard is the father figure, mentor, and heart-of-gold type. sheldon is more of the snarky, arrogant know-it-all.
