Thanks for a very reassuring review and approach to some of the new features. I have got a copy of Elements for both a Mac and Windows. The version I have for mac is 19.1.0 and is that same price as the older 15.2.0 and then 15.2.2. I just tell people I’m using a legacy version and that I only use the Features. I like the work flow in Elements and it is a useful tool. Its easy to edit your photos quickly and also it makes them look good quickly. Also the ‘pick up & drop’ of photos with Elements on a Mac is great. The price is right and I number of places I can buy the software is only one.
You can also set a default printer, as well as import photos into Photoshop from other software. This includes the latest photo management suite, Aperture, and 2008’s photo organizer, iPhoto. Since Photoshop CS5, you can also automatically create and open JPEG images if you shoot raw files in-camera.
Photoshop CS6 comes with a compatibility checker, which informs you whether legacy content, file formats, and other programs might cause issues with your software. It’s not perfect – it flagged the Nikon D3100 and Aperio RGB to me – but it’s a start.
Some third-party plugins for Photoshop CS5/CS6 aren’t ready yet, such as several of the bundled ones (like Lens Blur, Drawing it, Watercolor Painter, Painter, and Pen Tool). That’s partially Adobe’s fault for constantly shrinking the version numbering, and partially their archiving for stability.
Photoshop CS6 is an extraordinary tool for editing digital images, although it’s not a complete replacement for the traditional darkroom. It’s naturally more suited to digital images, and for that reason any user should get acquainted with it. But I find the simpler routing of Photoshop’s tools useful for quickly applying the latest editing techniques on my own work and those of my clients. Thanks for a thorough review! It seems to capture the essence of CS6. Most people, including “hardcore” (and there are many among us!) Photoshop power users are quite happy now with CS6. Of course, there are still some limitations, but we have learned to live with those. Key among the changes you mentioned are:- Performance boosts: the new “quick selection” (you know how you can select pixels with a single click with selection brushes?), live adjustments (overlaying a different color over your image automatically creates a color or grayscale adjustment layer), plus the “one click” horizontal/vertical file management. No more double-clicking to switch to the 25% view!- Adobe got rid of the “too many” top icons on the workspace, the “smart toolbox” is moving, and is now automatically populated with the most commonly used tools.- A lot less bloat. Dreamweaver, Flash, Acrobat, etc. all have been cleaned up, and in the end you’ll save a few GB of space. You’ll also appreciate that the new browser/PDF document integration is much faster than it used to be.- You mention “Pristine EPS” Adobe claims you can now load Photoshop CS6 as a “deeply wrapped” legacy version (I guess for those aging machines that can’t handle the latest versions). That’s great: it means you can now run CS6 on those machines, but you can use it like a CS5 program, since it’s a small 32-bit program. The downside is that if you add a PSD file from CS6 on, it will be converted to 8-bit since you’re running a “deeply wrapped” legacy version.- The behavior of the “new” layers are far better: it’s easier to trace individual pixels using the vector tools (thanks to the “trace pixels” tool), you can change/move/group/pencil individual layers, copy/paste individual layers, you can move/copies layers without affecting their contents, delete individual layers, etc. You can experiment while on a Photoshop CS5/CS6 file, and once you finish, without having to save, you can save as Photoshop CS6.PSD and open again to edit the file as you want.Here’s the link: http://digitalstyles.net/photoshop_review/
