Early history
The Ket Djoem was a part of a larger group of islands (Great Lakes of East Africa) that were settled by the Austro-Asiatic hunter gatherer-farmers who come to present-day Africa from Asia. The bodies of water connected to these islands were important for them as they were the main trade routes for food and other things between the Asian and African cultures. Early Mozambique culture lived on the Ket Djoem before the Portuguese made their presence felt in 1540

New Kingdom of Lejwe
After 1540 the Ket Djoem was ruled by the Lejwe people who were most likely the earliest inhabitants of Lejwe Island. In the 19th century, Moravians from the Rusyn-speaking Carpathian Mountains first settled in Lejwe Island.

Christianity
On May 13, 1955, Emily Barzykowski, a young missionary from Ithaca, New York, sailed to the Lake Turkana islands on a mission to teach her people about the Christian faith. Landing on Lake Turkana to the Hururumay clan, Barzykowski first addressed their daily needs and tended to their sick. The men of the village remained skeptical about her motives but accepted her at their front door with arguments of spiritual needs and questions.

The following days, Barzykowski built a small chapel on Reingebo Island where her ‘convincing’ converts baptised her. By the end of her mission, Barzykowski was well known for her preaching abilities and congregations were emerging from Stone Age huts to attend. The number grew steadily with the outreach to women and children as they attended an ‘acculturation’ school. The numbers of Christians grew as the Christian population increased.

When a German research team arrived in the area during that time, they documented many of the new converts and documented oral traditions of the people of the Lejwe Culture. Barzykowski converted to Catholicism as was common at the time and maintained her involvement in the Lej
