Here’s the story behind DNG Profile Editor with a little nice story.
I am, well, something of a professional photographer and have been working with RAW files for over 5 years. I usually take my Nikon D3100 and my other fine technical gear and simply work, composing shots and taking notes etc.
Recently, I was given a Fuji X10 for a test drive and I started taking more and more work with the Fuji. After a few months of learning to like the Fuji and its vastly superior capabilities, I decided I wanted to start learning the technology behind the Fuji’s sensors. So I realized, that although I had experience with RAW, I had no real understanding of the technical side of digital photography as it really is and that has always been the weakness of most of my previous imaging (I could never really say I was “good” at it).
I did my research and found that Fuji’s DNG format is amazingly useful, so I downloaded the format and got to work. I’ve found that the best way to learn is to just try to do it, so that’s what I have been doing.
It became clear to me early on that DNG was the greatest bit of technology I had ever seen in my life. It is insanely easy to open a RAW file as well as a DNG file, and the capabilities are vast. The list of things you can do with a camera sensor is almost endless. I realized that I would need a tool to help me in my quest to learn this stuff and could not find anything that really made sense. So here I am with my new toolkit, the thing that I use everyday.
Now there are other options out there, but they are somewhat lacking. I do have an application called RawDefine, which does open DNG files and does some slight work, but is so basic, that you can do most of the work on it. I use it for only the most basic operations.
DNG is built specifically for photographers and has amazing capabilities. It’s also incredibly simple to use.
