It can be difficult to find a thorough video tutorial for Photoshop. The Adobe site (www.adobe.com) does a good job of showcasing some of the newest features in Photoshop, but some of these videos are only available online, and some of the others are ridiculously overpriced.

My favorite Photoshop video tutorials are those produced by the folks at TechSmith at _www.techsmith.com._ These are free, and the video quality is often better than those produced by other vendors.

Why should I use Photoshop Elements over Photoshop?

One reason is that you may have limited access to Photoshop if you are a student or working in a non-Windows environment (an alternative is the open-source GIMP). There are also security issues surrounding the installation of professional versions of Photoshop (details below).

Another reason is for very simple tasks; you may have limited knowledge or skills of using Photoshop. The interface is much simpler than the professional version, so getting started is a lot easier.

If your skills are very limited, you may wish to learn the basics of graphic design in Photoshop before moving on to Photoshop Elements.

Installing and Using Photoshop Elements

There are very easy to follow instructions for installing Adobe Photoshop Elements, so you should have no problem. For security reasons, it is advisable to use a certified version of Photoshop Elements from Adobe – download the latest version here.

Please note: If you installed Photoshop using a patch, you need to have a certified version of Photoshop Elements and patch downloaded on the same computer to update your version of Photoshop.

Open the folder that you downloaded Photoshop Elements to and double-click the Photoshop Elements.exe file.

If you are installing Photoshop Elements for the first time, you will be asked to select an image to open. You can open a pre-existing image or save a new image (File > Save As). The default is to open an image.

Select Save as Image.

Select a suitable file name for your image. You can use the field at the top right of the Photoshop Elements window to show your document name and image extension (such as.jpg or.png).

If you want to save your image to the right size, select Browse. Then add a description, choose an appropriate quality setting (300 pixels for a small size, 600 pixels for medium and so on) and save your image.

To make sure you don’t download or install illegal software, be sure to select the box at the bottom of the box for legal software. Click OK.

The Photoshop Elements program will appear on your desktop after you installed it successfully.

Roughly, Photoshop Elements has a similar interface to Photoshop.

There are two main tabs on the Photoshop Elements interface – Home and Workspace.
