For 64-bit systems, the installer will place the IDL binaries in the Program Files directory and the IDL components in the Program Files (x86) directory. For 32-bit systems, the installer will place the IDL binaries and IDL components in the Program Files directory.

Where available, Microsoft will have a scripted installer option for IDL 8.x and greater as well. However, it is strongly recommended that users install IDL manually, as this enables you to set an IDL search path of your choice.

If you wish to update to IDL 8.5, it is recommended that you use the Idl 8.5 installer.

In addition, it is recommended that users update to the latest IDL releases available. IDL currently offers the ability to install multiple versions of IDL from different version sites at the same time.

The installer will check to see if the local computer has already installed the desired version of IDL. If not, IDL will attempt to download the installer from the main IDL site, using the URL https://idl.icl.org/dist/. If the installer finds the URL, the installer will download the latest version of IDL and attempt to install it. If there are any error messages, the installer will exit and offer to download a more recent version of IDL from the main IDL site. If there are no errors, the installer will continue.

To help a user find their IDL installer from a web browser, the installer site will look for the URL https://idl.icl.org/dist/. For example, if the user is using the current version of IDL, the URL is https://idl.icl.org/dist/2018.2.

The IDL search path includes the default locations of the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Runtime Package and Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package, along with any custom directories that you have defined for use with the setenv command.
