Families in Doctor Who are constructed either through narrative or through an implied choice. In the later years the most common narrative approach is for companions to return, bearing new family members or at least, expanded family ties. In each case, these relationships are established through the companions reactions to the Doctor and what they learn about him.
The ambiguity in Doctor Whos treatment of family – so much so that most readers find it impossible to pin down a steady sense of time and place for its stories – enables the programme to do what no other fictional drama has ever done. It is about an alien (the Doctor) who has travelled for more than half a century, through a vast, shifting cosmos, from its very first moments on the small screen in 1963 until the present day. In this time, it has encountered and vanquished numerous cosmic and existential threats. In the process, it has braved the void of space, journeyed through Time and, in some of its earlier incarnations, through history. It has touched and explored, examined and experimented upon, the innermost thoughts and feelings of millions of people from all over the planet, now becoming family to more than one and all of these characters, over the course of their adventures on screen, having changed their minds, their perceptions, their feelings about each other and the world they find themselves in, over a vast span of history. Every single episode of the programme contains a new or different viewpoint; be it a new companion, a new character, a new monster, a new planet or the repeated unravelling of the universe. Yet it is not just the viewpoint of the other characters that changes. The viewer feels that, although everything that occurs is new, it is not just the world, characters and events which change but the viewer and the way the viewer looks at them as well. Consequently, a sense of real, personal growth, a sense that the viewer has changed and that perhaps the Doctor has changed for the better, is always present. Even the Doctor himself questions the value of his life. In The Invisible Enemy (1972), he asks: Had I thousands of lives like this, every one of them useless and failed, useless, I would have no regrets. Only a few stand out; only a few are worthwhile. No matter how much your life is burdened with unhappy memories, it can still be a learning experience. You cant learn from pain, but you can learn from joy. Some people learn from sorrow, others from great joy. I learn from great joy. (From 1972-1973, Matt Smith) He is an alien on another planet, yet his sense of time and place seems typical of the viewer. She decides to see a film while wearing a nice outfit, but, while waiting for the show to start, she notices that her gym clothes have been left on her bed and begins to wonder whether a man sitting next to her would like to pay for a lift. She decides that this man might be more comfortable and friendly than the woman she had recently met in the pub.
The new families are organised around the male head of the family, and the female in-betweener. The dominant mother figures are actively involved in the day-to-day chores. Moreover, as Anderson and Scott ( 2011 ) point out, the Doctor seems to work best when he is regularly reminded of this domesticity and hence travels alone as an adult, not as a family man. Although the new series are ostensibly about adventure, and show a greater degree of optimism than the old series, the action is still located in the domestic sphere: even when they travel, the Doctor and his companions live in a domestic space, as they will spend many episodes in the TARDIS, surrounded by other families.
Significant in terms of female representation, Peri Brown (1988-1996, Nicola Bryant) is remembered for leaving the programme when she became engaged to the henchman Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart. This renders her departure a distinct event in the programme, since the henchman was the only male figure who had managed to permanently remain in her life. Furthermore, whereas previous companions have stepped out only to the degree that their presence in the TARDIS was felt to be an intrusion, Bryant’s departure marks a renegotiation with the Doctor. Instead of leaving, the Doctor merges her TARDIS crew into his, forming what Jowett (2017) calls a “buddy team”. This is a complete volte-face in terms of the old paradigm where the role of male companions was to provide a contrast to the all-female set-up of the TARDIS, thereby suggesting that there were two sexes, male and female. From the outset, however, new Who has refused to enforce binary gender norms by using only women companions. What is more, it is precisely the companions themselves who press this point. Most of the time, the Doctor simply admits he cannot accommodate male companions, in line with those Britains norms in which women are reputed to be better at enduring hardships. For example, in the earliest of the new Who episodes, Dalek (1974) demands that the Doctor hand over two female companions, the TARDIS crew being forced to retreat into a cupboard if they do not submit. Adric and Nyssa are therefore the first to be trained by the Doctor, as long as they understand that the ultimate threat for men is always women, and that the Doctor is not a man.
